Attractions

There are plenty of things to do in Edinburgh at any time of year. Here are some of the top attractions to give you a taste of the city, but there are plenty more activities to enjoy. You’ll just have to stay longer or come again soon!

Edinburgh Castle
Scotland’s top attraction is home to the Stone of Destiny and the ‘Honours of the Kingdom’, the Scottish Crown Jewels. Views from the castle ramparts are the best in the city.

Palace of Holyroodhouse
Now HM The Queen’s official residence in Scotland, the palace has strong links with the tragic story of Mary, Queen of Scots. It was here that Mary’s Italian secretary was murdered before the pregnant queen. A stunning building both inside and out.

Royal Yacht Britannia
Having welcomed kings, queens and heads of state aboard around the world, Britannia now greets visitors to its permanent home in Leith. A rare behind-the-scenes view of royal life at sea.

Royal Botanic Garden
A popular retreat for Edinburgh residents as much as visitors throughout the year. The world of plants from around the globe is explained and there to be explored. Inverleith House within the grounds hosts regular art exhibitions.

National Gallery of Scotland
The National Gallery Complex embraces the National Gallery and the adjacent Royal Scottish Academy. It houses Scotland’s permanent collections of fine art and plays regular host to major touring exhibitions. Admission to the permanent collections is free.

Scottish National Portrait Gallery
The great and the good from Scotland’s past and present all feature here, from Robert Burns to Sean Connery. A free shuttle bus connects this gallery with the other National Galleries in Edinburgh.

Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art
Sitting alongside the Dean Gallery, this gallery is the place for modern and contemporary art. Both galleries have popular cafés for coffee or lunch.

National Museum of Scotland
Discover the story of Scotland then explore the world of nature to art, science to culture all under one roof! Admission is free to the permanent collections. Regular exhibitions bring everything from the animated art of Pixar to the Romanov Dynasty to an eager Edinburgh audience.

St Giles’ Cathedral
The historic City Church of Edinburgh, St Giles is an iconic image with its crown spire. Also known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, it contains the Chapel of the Order of the Thistle (Scotland's chivalric company of knights headed by the Queen). Look out for the carved wooden angel playing the bagpipes!

Scotch Whisky Experience
A guided tour, tutored tasting and barrel ride and encounter with a ghostly Master Blender explore the history and mystery of Scotland’s national drink. This five-star attraction is great fun for all the family.
